Forskningstorget: Vennskap, trygghet og muligheter

Riikka Lätti er doktorgradsstipendiat og REASSESS-gjesteforsker fra Universitetet i Tampere.

Forskningstorget, the annual research fair took place in Oslo 18-19 September. One of the exciting research projects presented at the fair was the "Netverksråd" project, led by Ira Malmberg-Heimonen from GIV. In essence, the project is about studying the importance of social networks, social support and increasing social capital of social assistance recipients. At the fair, the project was coined in the concept of friendship ("Vennskap - trygghet og muligheter"): what are good friends like, and what is friendship all about?

Most of the visitors at the fair on Friday were school
classes. Before the fair started, we were worried about attracting enough people to visit our tent. Keeping it simple was nevertheless proven a useful rule of thumb. The children were given the task to draw their best friends, to map their social network or to write a poem of friendship. No further activation was needed: the tent was filled with pictures, maps and even poems in no time. Meanwhile, the project researchers Ira, Sidsel and Sissel were telling the visitors about the project and giving mini-interviews to older students.

I really enjoyed my time helping out at Forskningstorget, guiding the kids whilst simultaneously practising my Norwegian ("vil du tegne dine beste venner?"). Hence, for my part I thank all the participants for a fine Friday afternoon!
